Capturing the Ultimate Speaker Competition

October 2024, our team at Arcturus Cinema had the privilege of documenting the Ultimate Speaker Competition: Military Veterans Edition. This two-day event combined inspirational workshops and a speaking competition designed specifically for military veterans.

Planning the Production

Prior to the event, we worked closely with organizers Christoff and Michelle to map out comprehensive video and photo coverage. Our pre-production meetings focused on identifying key moments to capture, including:

• Opening ceremonies and energetic introductions

• Workshop sessions led by bestselling authors and coaches

• Contestant preparations and behind-the-scenes moments

• The competition itself featuring 25 veteran speakers

We strategically positioned our equipment to ensure nothing would be missed while remaining unobtrusive to the participants.

Adapting to a Dynamic Environment

What makes events like these particularly challenging is their dynamic nature. The energy in the room was electric from the start, with participants engaged in interactive exercises, spontaneous sharing, and powerful moments of vulnerability.

As the event kicked off, we witnessed veterans breaking out of their comfort zones—some admitting they were "done hiding" or ready to "step out of their box." Our team had to stay nimble, adjusting camera positions and audio capture methods to document these authentic moments.

The opening ceremonies set the tone with high-energy participation, the Pledge of Allegiance, and a prayer led by Chaplain Down. Throughout the event, speakers and attendees alike shared why they were there—from "sharing nutrition with veterans" to "breaking down stigmas and barriers for first responders and military."

Post-Production: Bringing the Stories to Life

Following the event, our team edited:

• 25 individual speaker videos, each capturing the unique story and message of a veteran participant

• Workshop footage documenting the learning process and breakthrough moments

• Opening and closing ceremonies that bookended this transformative experience

One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was witnessing the journey of these veterans as they embraced their voices. As Christoff reminded them, "You have greatness within you," and our cameras were there to document that greatness emerging.
